"I want you to help me to live as a Christian and die as a Christian..."
~ Moses, India
July 2005

You are just like us. You love world missions. I know because you are a WBS teacher. We hope you will join us at the Global Missions Conference (GMC) in Arlington, Texas, especially at the WBS workshops. The WBS workshops will be held at 2:00 and 3:00 on Saturday, July 23rd with a Special Interest Group discussing Internet and Missions at 8:30 on Wednesday evening, July 20th.

The purpose of the GMC is to bring churches of Christ together to focus on more effectively reaching our world for Christ. The conference will be July 20-23 at the Arlington Convention Center, Arlington, Texas. The event is coordinated by Missions Resource Network.

WBS workshops - These classes will cover both Postal and Internet advances in curriculum and the use of technology to assist in teaching the gospel. Practical tips for teachers will encourage and inspire those who attend.

Internet and Missions Special Interest Group - The interest group will discuss ways the Internet is being used to create a sense of community among Christians on both sides of the ocean. Others are using the Internet to build bridges from Christians and those not-yet-Christian. Join us to learn how Internet technology can enhance your mission efforts.

Update on Our brethren in Somalia.
Thank you to everyone who offered prayers on behalf of the brethren in Somalia. Brother Greg Wells, (Australia) writes that the church in Somalia is now doing well.

An Internet Cafe in Somalia
"It looked like it was all over there a month or so ago when Abdulkadir and a new brother in Christ, Soloman, were arrested. Thankfully Abdulkadir's Father, a tribal elder, came to their defense and has negotiated their release. The school they started has reopened and the church still meets there in secret. There are now 13 members of the church there with their children. Abdulkadir is translating the WBS studies into Somali and is using them to teach the brethren. As he said to me the other day, if he is killed at least the brethren will have some study material to continue with. He is an inspiring brother."
The Anchor's Away -
by Edie Connel, Student Coordinator

As WBS study helpers, you are part of an exciting and vital ministry. Many times you serve as the students' "spiritual anchor" as you share the Good News with people from "all nations". Regular communication with your students becomes essential.

Out of Port
In times when you are going to be away from your computer for more than a week - vacation, surgery, or illness - WBS recommends you notify your students in order to facilitate a more effective study experience.

Making your students aware of your absence will give them confidence in the value you place on your relationships as you communicate your interest in their spiritual well-being.

Teaching Tip: We suggest sending extra lessons so students may continue the studies in your absence.

Pulling up the Anchor
On the rare occasion a teacher is unable to continue as a Study Helper, WBS asks the teacher to contact the Teacher Coordinator (teachers@wbschool.org).  We want the students to have the opportunity to continue in their studies.  Students will be contacted and reassigned to other WBS teachers as quickly as possible.

The WBS Teacher Coordinator reassigns students for a teacher when he:

  • is having long-term computer problems
  • is unavailable for several weeks or more due to illness or vacation
  • is unable to continue working with students due to unforeseen circumstances

" We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure..."
Hebrews 6:19

Ever thought of this?
by Lucas Acosta, Abilene, Texas

I include a message to my students asking them if they want to receive a whole course at a time rather than sending one lesson at a time. It helps them work at their own pace if I’m not available everyday, and it’s easier for me to keep track of how my students are progressing. 77% of my students who have completed at least one course are on this system. We still have great discussions, and they can finish more than one lesson at a time if they have a free day. A sample message is available on the teachers website. Hope this helps! And look for other tips in the Casting the Nets to come. Click the link below to view the sample. (The sample message can also be found with the "Quick Notes to Students" under the "Resources" link on the teachers website.)

"Sometimes I forget..."
by Donna Branham, Summerville, South Carolina
I love what I do and enjoy the communication with the students that I have been blessed with. I am the one being blessed abundantly. I learn so much each day through them. One thing for sure is not to take my Christianity for granted and the means I have to readily study with someone. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has what I have. I need to be reminded. Anyway, I am grateful to be a part of something so special.

Sharing the old, old story.

We wish you could be in the WBS office when we receive an inspiring story from a teacher. It is so faith-building!

We invite you to help us build a collection of the old, old story as it pertains to WBS. We will share the stories with you and others.

How has WBS impacted your life or the life of one of your students?

Your experience in WBS may inspire someone else to join you in saving souls. Share your stories with us today! teachers@wbschool.org

Matching Teachers to New Students
by Skye Noe, Teacher Coordinator

As many of you already know, one of my tasks is to keep you current with new students coming into your in-box frequently. This process starts when you communicate that you are ready and willing to take on new students. Once I have been notified, I start the process of pairing students with the best matched teachers. In order to help me find a perfect match, I would like to ask for your help.

WBS is in the process of building up your teacher profile. We are constantly looking for better ways to match teachers with students. One way we have found to be effective is to assign students from areas in which you have an interest. Please let me know any areas you have visited or supported missionaries. Another option is to select a region where your church is involved with mission efforts. This allows you to partner with the missionaries on the field. We do not always have students waiting from a specific area, but when we do, we will make effort to send them to you.

Contact me at teachers@wbschool.org to update your file with your regional interests.

Your help is making a difference!

We are excited to announce that the time new students wait for a teacher has been greatly reduced! This is due to your great efforts in recruiting more teachers and participating in the Teacher Rotation Program.

  • 76 new teachers registered in June. This is a record!
  • Over 50 Teachers are now part of the rotation program.

There is still great work to do. We must continue to strive for our goal to Make it a Million! Thanks to God for preparing the harvest, there are always more students who are ready and willing to study God’s word. Keep up the good work!
